NEW BOOK IN RESOURCE CENTRE

A couple of months ago ABC journalist, Louise Milligan published “Cardinal” an investigation into the sad-and-sorry story of child abuse by some Catholic clergy.

Particularly it focuses on the figure of Cardinal George Pell, once a priest in Ballarat, then Archbishop of Melbourne and later Sydney. I have placed the book in the resource centre with the warning – it is a disturbing, depressing read.

Last week I heard the author speak about the book in Ballarat. This week George Pell was charged to appear in Melbourne’s Magistrate Court. He said he is coming to clear his name.

Understandably the book has been withdrawn from sale, but I suppose copies will continue to be read. I found it well-written, not a witch-hunt, and very sad – but important. My hope for George Pell, and the Catholic Church is that he does not have a case to answer. But there still remain the survivors and victims (many of whom are dead) of terrible abuse by a number of priests.

It’s important that truth prevail. David
