Greetings,
Last week we were talking about the gifts that we have and how we are called to share them to build up the body of Christ and to make a positive difference in the community in which we find ourselves. God blesses us in many ways and as blessed people we are called to be a blessing to others. There are many ways in which we can bless others, but first we need to realise our own blessings, and these come in a variety of ways.
While we might not dwell on it too often, one of the ways that the Koonung Heights Uniting Church community is blessed is that we are not suffering financial hardship. As a congregation we have beautiful facilities where we can worship, we can afford to pay a full-time minister, we can support the wider work of the church and we can look at ways to engage with new expressions of mission – all because of our financial capacity.
The church has long had a funny relationship with money, and the protestant reformation has something to do with this, but this is still with us. I have been in worship spaces where the collection is never put on the communion table with the bread and wine because it somehow doesn’t belong there. I don’t agree.
In fact good stewardship of our finances is one of the ways that we can be the church which shares the good news of the gospel of Christ. For money is not just about dollars, cents, spreadsheets and what we have. Rather, our budget says something about who we are and what we have been gifted with to equip us for God’s mission in the place where we
are.
Let us continue to move forward as a community, sharing the good news of Christ with those around us.
Blessings – Rev Heather.
