Greetings …
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh months in 1918, the armistice (laying down of arms) was signed to end the First World War. This coming Tuesday we will remember the sacrifice made by men and women not only in World War I, but also in the many wars that have taken place since. Let us hope that while we stop to remember, we might also contemplate peace.
May this reflective prayer aid us as we remember …
Lord, are we ready to remember and what do we remember?
We remember the lives lost in battle, in bombings,
in hospital beds and trenches.
We remember the bravery of young men who went off to war,
they were not ready for the horrors they faced.
We remember the women and children left behind,
having to get ready for air raids and rationing.
We remember those industries getting ready for war,
for those making munitions, battle armour and uniforms.
We remember leaders getting ready for the biggest battle of their lives,
taking risks and making decisions that would affect millions of lives.
We remember that those who fought, fought for peace,
a peace they hoped would last forever.
And … we remember those who continue to fight for peace today,
those men and women who serve our nation in the armed forces,
both at home and overseas.
May they remain vigilant and dedicated, keen to serve others
and strive to make this world a more just and peaceful place.
We pause to remember for we must never forget.
Amen.
