Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2023, 9th April

Easter Greetings …

On Sunday the church tree will be complete with images from the stories we have been reminded of over Easter.  For each of us it is tempting to move with haste to Sunday … to the day when we celebrate resurrection and recall the story of new life.  But other encounters happen before this time …

Maundy Thursday we remember the woman who anoints Jesus, ministering to him in a way that is almost prophetic while showing the extravagant love that she has.  We also recall the meal that Jesus shares with his disciples before his betrayal in the garden – a meal where he takes the time to encourage his disciples to show his compassionate love to others.

On Good Friday we find ourselves witness to torture and death as we stand by the cross wondering how it could have come to this.  We hear the words it is finished and think for a moment that maybe it is.  Yet even as the darkness gathers something makes us stay, clinging on to the tenuous hope and faith we have.

When Easter Day arrives we are ready to celebrate with the women who journey to the tomb.  We urge them on because we know the outcome, we know that the most wonderful thing awaits them even though they don’t know it yet.  We feel Mary’s heart break when she discovers Jesus body is missing, only to feel it heal when Jesus calls her name.  We are comforted to know that Jesus’ also calls our names.

For another year we have walked this journey with Jesus … a journey which asks everything of us.  We walk this journey because Jesus has called us by name and we need to walk with him.  Let us continue to listen for where Jesus is calling us to journey.

Easter blessings – Heather (she/her).
