Greetings …
So the last week didn’t end up the way I had planned. I had lots of things in the diary – I had intended to be a variety of meetings, I had expected to be at worship with everyone last Sunday, I had planned afternoon tea with the family for Mother’s Day. Instead all of these things were interrupted.
While interruptions can be frustrating, there were also blessings to be found in this interrupted space. The pace of life slowed somewhat, and as I isolated I found time to sit and read. While sitting still I was able to enjoy the way the sunlight played on the leaves of the camelia tree. I listened again to the sounds of the birds who visited the garden. I was able to gently ponder and in no time at all I felt refreshed and renewed.
We never know when interruptions will come but being open to what they offer can make all the difference. Many times in his ministry Jesus was interrupted. In Matthew 9 we witness some of these interruptions.
In the middle of a teaching conversation, a synagogue leader interrupts Jesus and asks him to travel with him and lay hands on his daughter who had just died. On the way to the leader’s house, Jesus is interrupted by a woman who touches his cloak. Yet despite these interruptions, Jesus didn’t ask either to take a number and wait their turn, or to come back later at a more convenient time. Instead he handled these interruptions with grace, seeing them as an opportunity to serve and bring healing, to both the woman and the child.
Life might be full of interruptions but we can be blessed when we are open to the interruption that arrives. It might also be that when we attend to the interruption we are able to offer blessing to those that need it.
May God continue to interact with us through interruptions, and might we be open to the blessings available within those.
Blessings – Heather (she/her).
