Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2023, 23rd July

Greetings …

the glory of God is marvellous in the miniscule as well as the amazing – and it’s sometimes in the common things that God’s radiance is most clearly seen.

This message is what greeted me when I opened my daily desk calendar this morning, and I found that it was a refreshing and helpful reminder.  There is so much happening in the world that seems ‘big’ and it is not always easy to see the glory of God in this ‘big’ stuff.  I’m sure this is the way it has always been, but as technology makes our world seem smaller, we are more aware of the things that impact people across the world.  Conflicts happening overseas now appear in our loungerooms and the impacts of climate change are now being felt globally.  We might wonder how we see God in all of this.

I firmly believe that God is present in things and it is often my lack of vision which stops me from seeing.  The ‘big’ stuff takes my attention away from where God is working and God’s radiance can be seen.  So then where is God in the little things and how can I see that?

It’s about being mindful and attentive to the ordinary moments where God is present in our own experiences.  When we slow down, smaller things come into focus … rather than  just seeing the tree as we rush past, we might notice the individual leaves or the veins on the leaf when we time the time to pause.

We begin to notice not only the conflict, but the generosity of those who shelter others despite this.  We become aware of more people walking to school pickup and notice that we are recycling more.  God is in all these small things … and when God is in them they aren’t that small.

May you take time this week to slow down, and may you be surprised at where you find God in the common ‘small’ stuff.

Blessings – Heather.
