Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2024, 10th November

Greetings …
Tuesday was Melbourne Cup Day. Did you watch the ‘race that stops a nation’?
As a family we always watch the race and did again this year. I can also say that I actually
picked the winner – though this had nothing to do with my knowledge of racing which is non-existent. For me it was all about the name – Knights Choice sounded romantic and
medieval so that’s the horse I picked!
While the race itself is over in a few minutes, the Melbourne Cup is a big event and those who hope to participate do lots of training and work before the day. There is a general party atmosphere to the day for those who attend, but in the end it’s just one race and there are only a small number of horses qualify to enter.
Some see life as a kind of race where we have to go from the starting gate at birth to the finish line which comes somewhere down the track and is often unknown. The bible reminds us that the race of life is one where we can all be winners if we run with God as our goal. We don’t have to reach a certain standard to enter, we don’t have to have amazing backers or a huge bankroll
behind us, it doesn’t matter whether we are quick or slow – all that matters is that we keep going down the track that God calls us to.
May we keep putting one foot in front of the other as we discern what God is calling us to, and may we be encouragers to one another as we journey to what is ahead of us.
Blessings – Rev Heather Hon (she/her).
