Greetings,
As we have been journeying through Easter we have read of Jesus’ resurrection appearances. On the first Easter Day Jesus appeared to Mary in the garden, last week Jesus appeared to his disciples behind closed doors, and this week Jesus again appears to his disciples after an unsuccessful night out fishing. Breakfast at Dawn, by Mike Moyers, illustrates this resurrection encounter. Moyers speaks about his work on his website.
In this painting, I tried to imagine that beautiful morning meal. The composition is both macro and micro. Brother sun rises over the world’s horizon—illuminating the sea with dancing light. The reflections swell to the shore where we see the abandoned boat and a circle of fellowship. Looking close, you can see a communion of grace taking place.
This is more than a sunrise breakfast. It is morning worship. God’s people abandon the work of the day, gather together to break bread and be near the Lord again. In this circle, Christ makes himself known to us, teaches us, and forgives our sins. Christ feeds us and calls us to act in love for the world.
I am particularly attracted to the idea of God’s people laying aside daily tasks to come together in with God and one another. As we gather and share in community together, may we hear again the call of the risen Christ to do what we do in love for God’s world.
Blessings – Heather.
