Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2022, 12th June

Greetings …

… and happy Trinity Sunday.  Trinity Sunday is celebrated on first Sunday after Pentecost, which is the 50th day after Easter, and celebrates the mystery of faith and unity of God imaged as Creator, Redeemer and Guide, or more traditionally as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Trinity Sunday was first instituted in 9th century by Pope Gregory IX, but established officially by Pope John XXII in 14th century, who believed that it should be the day Christians celebrate the Triune God.  There is, of course, the argument that we should do this each Sunday, but having a particular day of celebration focus does focus our attention on the mystery of God.

As the doctrine of the Trinity helps us talk about how God is actively involved in the world, it also challenges us to look at how we are involved in the world.  We are aware that it is Trinity Sunday, but I wonder if we are also aware that today, 12 June, is also World Day Against Child Labour.  I wonder if we know that according to the UN, there are ‘an estimated 152 million children in child labour around the world’ or realise that ’62 million of these children come from the Asia and Pacific region’.

This is a huge issue and child education opportunities and labour laws are things can seem outside our scope, but we can make a difference.  We can give financial support to groups like Kondanani Zambia who support children with ongoing education.  We learnt through the Oxfam ‘What She Makes’ campaign that we can become informed about the clothing labels we buy.  A living wage means children might remain in schooling other than having to work so their family can eat.  For more ideas about what you can do, feel free to visit: https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-day-against-child-labour

As we continue to celebrate Gods involvement with us, let us give some time to thinking about how we might be involved in our world.

Blessings – Heather.
