Greetings …
Do you remember knitting a climate scarf last year? Well, if you did, this cold weather is a perfect time to get it out again, wear it and have some good conversations about the climate. Tuesday 21 June was #ShowYourStripes Day. This relatively new international day aims to spread awareness about climate change and rising global temperatures with the iconic warming stripes.
The warming stripe graphs represent how temperatures have changed over the past century or so. Primarily temperatures have risen due to the climate crisis and global warming. Climate scientists have noted how we are seeing these changes in, among other things, rising sea levels, droughts, floods, changes in marine life and coral reefs. We have seen it in our own country with the devastation brought about by recent floods and fires. Wilderness areas and our communities are still recovering.
With the election of our 47th Parliament in Australia, there seems to be a renewed and strong focus on climate action. Only last week the Albanese Government officially raised Australia’s 2030 emission reduction target from 26-28% to 43%. This is something to be thankful for, but we still need to take more steps forward responding to the climate crisis.
As we continue to share the story, let us hold our nation’s leaders in prayer as they work together on this issue and others for the good of all people who call Australia home.
