2022, 11th September

Greetings …

Most days in our calendar are designated as special days for something.  Thursday 8 September is RU OK? Day.  This is the national day of action when we remind people that it is good to ask ‘are you okay?’, and that having this conversation can what encourages someone to get the help they need.

Approximately 40% of the Australian population feel that asking someone if they are ok is a conversation that should be left to an expert.  Certainly, the work of health professionals is vital, and their value cannot be underestimated, but each one of us can play a role in supporting people, particularly those we know.

You don’t need to have particular qualifications to have an RU OK? conversation – you just need to be prepared to ask the question and listen with an open mind.  Giving someone your time might be just what they need to help them through a tough time.  We all know that things are not always okay and that having a friend can make a real difference in those times. Maybe standing with someone will help them get the access any further supports that they might need.

Remember that every day is the day to ask ‘are you OK?’.   Don’t be scared to start a meaningful conversation when you think someone you care about might be struggling.  So … RU OK?

Blessings – Heather.
