Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2023, 24th September

Greetings …

Over the last month we have been working through the Season of Creation using a different lens each week.  This coming Sunday the lens we are given is ‘River’ which is not really surprising, as it is World Rivers Day.

According to www.worldriversday.com, World Rivers Day is about celebrating the world’s waterways.  The program is multi-faceted, and it includes highlighting the many values of our rivers, as well as striving to increase public awareness, and encouraging the improved stewardship of rivers around the world.  It is disturbing to think that rivers in virtually every country face an array of years ahead.

The first World Rivers Day was held in 2005 and was celebrated in dozens of countries.  Now, nearly 20 years later, the event has continued to grow and is now celebrated in up to one hundred countries by several million people.  For its founder, Mark Angelo, ‘Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense.’

We need water to sustain life, yet we too quickly overuse and pollute our waterways, which are fragile ecosystems.  As people of faith, we also acknowledge that we need the living water which sustains us at another level.

May each one of us realise how important it is to care for our waterways, and may we continue to invite others to places where they can receive the living water Jesus offers.

Blessings – Heather (she/her).
