Greetings …
In early October we were blessed to see new life emerge in our front garden. Just outside our loungeroom window we have a large camelia bush and, to our surprise, a nest had been built in it. We watched over a couple of weeks while the mother bird sat on her eggs. We saw chicks appear and were impressed by the actions of the parents as they fed and protected their young. When the time was right the young ones were encouraged to leave the nest and go out into the rest of their lives. All this unfolded before our eyes from the comfort of our lounge.
You might imagine my delight when, over last weekend, I saw some more birds investigating the nest. A lovely pair of finches this time, a different breed to the nest-builders, have been tidying up, renovating and are now sitting on some eggs. It looks like we might be lucky enough to see new life emerge once again.
While watching these birds I was reminded of the message Jesus shared as part of the Sermon on the Mount. Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? … So do not worry about tomorrow (Matthew 6:24, 34a).
It isn’t always easy not to worry, but these little birds in our garden have been provided for. I could easily have overlooked them, but something made me notice and delight in what I saw. And maybe the noticing was part of God’s provision for me – a reminder that I don’t need to worry about what’s ahead because, whatever it is, God is already there and that is enough.
Blessings – Heather (she/her).
