Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2020, 8th March

Greetings …
I hope that you are finding the Lenten reflections helpful. We continue this week with another two reflections from Psalm 51.

3 rd Wednesday of Lent – 11 March – Psalm 51:7
“Cleanse me with hyssop”

Hyssop is a small aromatic plant which is part of the mint family. It is used in cooking,
medicine and in ancient Jewish rites of purification. It is no wonder then that the psalmist
asks that he be cleansed with something that is healing both inside and out. This is the
cleaning that God offers – a complete washing that takes care of the muck that impacts
our lives. The forgiveness that God offers brings healing and wholeness so that we can
be completely restored.

3 rd Sunday of Lent – 15 March – Psalm 51:10a
“Create in me a clean heart”

The psalmist asks that now he is cleaned, the One who created the world might create in
him a clean heart, a heart that is pure. While purity carries with it the connotation of
something empty and untarnished, it is so much more. Purity is wholeness, stillness and
perfect ground in which to grow something that is very good. It is the place where the
Creator can create a masterpiece. Are we ready for God to create that masterpiece in us?
