Welcome to Koonung Heights Uniting Church

2020, 13th September

Greetings …
What a delight it was to participate in the Zoom coffee time after church last Sunday. As we were awaiting Daniel Andrews’ ‘Road Map out of Lockdown’ announcement, the mood of the assembled group became more positive as we shared stories of forest and bushland. You could hear the joy as people continued to share meaningful experiences that took us out of ourselves.
I was again struck by the fact that Earth is our planet home, the place chosen for us to live with God, our sacred site in all creation. Many would say that it is important to find rites or forms of meditation that help us connect with earth and experience it as a true home rather than just a stopover en route to heaven.
One spiritual exercise that proves meaningful to some people involves taking a trip into the country and finding a space which gives a view of the surrounding countryside. While we can’t do that at the moment, we might be able to find a space in our garden or a good view of trees from our balcony. Alternatively, a focus on rocks, soil, sand or plants, might form a centre for us. Another possibility is to take a sprig of rosemary or another scented plant that helps stir memories of past connections with Earth as close and special.
From this point of focus name all that you can which belongs to your home: trees, plants,
wildflowers, birds, hills, rocks, clouds, animals, and so on. Memories associated with any of these might strengthen the feeling of being at home. Ask yourself how you are connected with the land at your feet or the living creatures you see around you.
To make this connection tangible, touch a leaf or take your shoes off and feel what is beneath your feet. Remind yourself of the psalmist’s words in Psalm 139 – I was made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the Earth. Be still and know who you are and who God is.
Blessings – Heather.
