Greetings …
I wonder what you have been thinking about during the week … what is the stuff that has been on your mind?
I’ve been thinking about who we are as the church. I suppose this is a question that the church always needs to ask itself, but I have found myself pondering whether we, at Koonung Heights, are the community that Jesus calls us to be? Are we a community that not only nurtures the faith of those within our walls, but is sharing the message of the love of Jesus with those who haven’t heard it yet?
My pondering is in part due to the fact that I’ve begun reading The Church as Salt, a book written by Sally Douglas in 2021. Set in the context of the rapid change in our society over the last couple of decades as to how the church is seen, and written during the pandemic, Sally encourages readers to look again at the call of Jesus to be the salt of the earth. Salt is not big, but it has an impact … a few small grains can season, preserve and cleanse.
I am also thinking about this in relation to the questions we have asked about music and worship. These are important, but I wonder if the bigger question we should be asking is whether we have lost our saltiness? While music affects each of us who worship here, it doesn’t make much difference to those we don’t see on a Sunday. I wonder what might be the seasoning that we sprinkle into our wider community? What is the one thing that we, as a congregation, might do to be salt to those outside our walls?’
You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?”
(Matthew 5:13)
Blessings – Heather.
